    background info

when people ask me what i am most proud of, this is the answer.

i felt that dealate was an artistic and emotional success. but it still failed sonically. i knew that i wanted the next album to sound comparable to a "professional record," without all of the bells and whistles of a professional studio. luckily, i found magix music maker at a really cheap price, and i went on from there.

the theme for a new album came to me when i started thinking about how i experienced music as a child. whenever a new album came out, i would always listen to it with headphones, at night, in bed. that way, there could be no distractions. listening to albums that way really got me into the music more than just having it playing in the background somewhere. and it really made me appreciate how records were made - the sound of the drums, the background noise, the random sound effects, etc. i wanted to make that kind of record.

during this time, i was an insomniac and i was obsessed with dreams. i also i happened to be listening to a lot of kate bush at the time. the second half of her albums hounds of love and aerial are seemless streams of sound, where no song can be taken out of context. again, i wanted to make that kind of record.

the result is an album that i'm extremely happy with. i honestly felt like i was possessed when i was recording, looping, re-recording and putting this album together. i did it all in about one month, sometimes not sleeping at all.

i did a show to support this release, and it eventually became a success, in my eyes at least. "pull a lever, pull the trigger" got weekly airplay on 96 wave. yes, yes.

    Story behind some songs ...

again, i wanted this album to be one continuous stream of sound so that no song could be taken out of context ... "waking life" and various anime movies (escaflowne, vampire hunter d: bloodlust, the legend of black heaven) were sampled throughout the disc ... tracks 1-9 are supposed to simulate 24 hours - early morning to night to early morning again ... "purple heart" is for casey ... "rhyme" was recorded in 1987 ... i set up my microphone to my alarm clock to get the samples of the right-wing radio personality in "pull a lever, pull the trigger" ... i originally recorded "the pulse" as track 19, then took it off when "terrorism" came to me late one night.
